Want to have a good time and still lose weight? Don’t you know that you have to take weight loss very seriously and you cant have any fun while trying to do it? I’m Just messing with you. Of course you can have a great time while you trying to lose weight. If your on the Keto Diet, (or just limiting your carbs). You might be wondering if you can have anything to drink? Luckily for you the answer is yes! Welcome to the Keto Alcohol cheat sheet!
If you dont drink, that’s fine, but if going out to a party or having a night out on the town with your friends evolves having a few drinks, you might be wondering if that’s even possible while limiting you carbohydrate intake.
After all, most alcoholic beverages have lots of sugar and carbs in them!
Let’s Break This Down
When you drink alcohol your body stops metabolizing everything else and starts working on the booze. so you will have to metabolize that drink before you body even begins to start on your dinner.
You see your body has no way of storing alcohol. it has to convert it into a fatty acid first. Long story short alcohol take priority for you metabolism, remember that.
If you start drink in excess, you will probably start to find that you weight loss will start to stall. You definitely dont want this to happen. You were just starting to see some results!
Now, If you are in Ketosis, you also wont have a stomach full of pasta to help buffer the affects of alcohol, so watch out. your body will really go for the alcohol and stop metabolizing that fat you’ve eaten.
It will be like drinking on an empty stomach, its just going to hit you a lot harder. So be cautious, that’s all.
Also know as The Munchies! my favorite bar use to have a Gyro cart parked right out side. the smell would waft into the bar and after a few drinks, Oh man. All I could think about was introducing my mouth to a delicious lamb gyro!
So make sure you are aware of you reduced inhibitions while drinking. I mean, you should be doing that anyway. but really know that after a few drinks you probably aren’t going to care about sticking to your diet. Especially when a friend orders a plate of nachos, or some fries for the table.
Make sure you have already eaten before you start drinking, just to be safe.
So… What Can You Drink
there are many recipes for great keto alcohol drinks out there, I’ll list a few for you in a second. But fist lets just go over the basics of Keto Alcohol.
“Keto Alcohol” is usually the clear liquors that are 90 proof or higher. (hello everclear, no, J.K. Stay away from that stuff)
Here is a list of safe choices:
As long as these are unsweetened you are good to go. the difficult part here is that you are limited to what you can mix these with.
- Water: seltzer or carbonated is fine
- sugar free soda
- Diet tonic water
I dont think you should limit yourself to these just avoid anything that has a sweet taste, For the most part. some mixers, like tonic water for example has lots of carbs in them but you wouldn’t really notice from the taste.
Just try drinking a vodka or whiskey soda, these can be pretty simple and smooth if done right. ask the bar tender to put in some unsweetened lemon juice or bring a thing of Mio water enhancer with you.
Avoid any mixers that have sugar in them. I know that sounds obvious but it bears saying.
If you are a beer fan, most of the really tasty stuff is going to be off limits to you while your on the Keto Diet.
You might be able to get away with something really lite, like MGD 64 or Michelob Ultra, just dont go overboard with it.
A small amount of red or white wine,(like 5oz) could be ok. Avoid any dessert wines!
Drinking Alcohol on the Keto Diet is OK
Its more important to understand how what you are drinking is going to effect you body than just sticking to rigid list of recipes. its the same for what you eat. understanding how you Body metabolize food and how it gets its energy.
