When searching for airline tickets you will probably try using some of the larger, more well know search engines. I’m not going to name names, you have seen the ads on TV for them.
These search engines are owned by airlines!
That’s right. The very airlines that you are hoping to find a cheap flight on.
Do you trust an airline to give you the absolute most rock bottom price on their product? Would you trust a car dealership to give you the very best deal on a car?
Instead what you are going to do, (since you are a very smart and cunning individual). Is use these search engines instead. They are the key to how to get cheap flights.
Its important that you do your research, and use all of these search engine, dont just use one and hope for the best. really look around. maybe prices will be the same, maybe not.
Here are the search engines I recommend using.
Sky Scanner is a great toll for searching multiple airlines at once. It will also show you the cheapest flight from your local airport to anywhere in the world. this is a great feature. I often have know idea where i would like to take a vacation and this can definitely help me decide. for instance, it is actually cheaper to fly to Kona than it is to St. Louis. I Would have not guessed that!
Matrix Airfare is a great tool that will let you search by “cheapest available”. it was developed at MIT, so you know its smart! the only down side is that you cant book you cheap flight directly on the site.
I think its worth you time to check it out thought. You can open up another browser tab to save $100 right?
Momondo is great for those looking for cheap flights. Their search function will let you search “anywhere”, which will bring up a map and pins with prices on it. this is an extremely easy way to see at a glance how much it might cost to travel to the other side of the country, Europe, Asia…etc. I find it extremely helpful to have a map where I can scroll around to check prices.
Hey! this price keeps going up!
Yes it does! you aren’t going crazy. the more times you search for a certain destination the more the airlines know you want to go.
How do you fix this?
Easy! Always do your searching in “private” or “incognito” modes so the airlines cant track you.
Alright. No You know how to search I want to show you how you can refine this process even further.
Search at the right time
Around 3 pm eastern time on Tuesday is the best time to find cheap flights. Go figure huh? Middle of the week, probably less people looking and booking. anyway use this knowledge to you advantage.
You are also going to couple this with knowing that on average the cheapest day to fly is Wednesday. see middle of the week, everybody want to fly out on Friday or Saturday. That just means that the demand, and prices, go up!
You will also want to be looking about 6 weeks in advance. I know this isn’t always an option. but its when Flights are at their cheapest.
You can sign up to receive notifications when a particular destination has a low rate
a service like Airfarewatchdog can alert you when that flight to Las Vegas is the cheapest.
Check out Nearby airports.
This is a pretty self explanatory travel hack. instead of searching at your nearest airport. Try looking at the next on over. Air Fare may be quite different between locations. You can also search regional airports as well. dont be afraid of them just because they large international hubs. If you are really serious about finding out how to get cheap flights , you wont let trying new things get in your way.
Use multiple airlines to get to and from your destination
It might be convenient to buy a round trip ticket. however its not always the cheapest. this is one of those tips that you will have to just look for your self. It might work for your situation, so why not give it a shot and do a little more research.
Use frequent flyer miles(obviously) and check for student, senior, veteran, bereavement discounts
If you use a credit card that racks up airline miles. make sure and use that when you buy plane tickets. if you have enough you might be able to fly for free!
Another great thing to check,if they apply to you) is if you can receive an discounts. some airlines have them others dont, or they might be seasonal who knows unless you ask?
Fly an indirect route
Flying non stop is always the fastest. But if you know how to get cheap flights, you know its never going to be the cheapest. Airlines know that everybody wants to fly direct. and that means the prices are going to be higher.
This is something that you will notice a lot in travel. if it saves time, or is more comfortable , its going to cost more. Same thing goes for hotels, restaurants, car rentals… etc.
Its best if you can be flexible in when you want to travel. Then you can go to the cheapest times.
That being said,
